Born in Tokyo in 1990. Currently based in Tokyo. While a student at the Department of Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, Uchida gained recognition for her delicate, craft-like works using washi paper as a material.
With a background in graphic design and an innate sensitivity to the texture of materials, Uchida's practice has evolved from a morphological exploration of the similarities between washi paper and moths to an exploration of the distance between the self and the other, or between concept and form, as the medium has expanded in recent years to include photography, video, and installation.
For her, production is an experimental act that bridges the gap between two things, using a variety of means and forms. The practice of washi paper, which uses the motif of the moth and the human body as icons of metamorphosis from life to death, has become Uchida's life's work. The work can be glimpsed as a first layer that overlaps with Uchida's broad range of expressive techniques of connecting two distant parties and intervening and reconstructing the process of transformation.
